Nanotechnology has been seen as a new ‘technological revolution’, while the emergence of the ‘nanoworld’ will greatly influence society in the same way as the arrival of ‘digital technology’ has change the way of life. However, the needs of society should be considered as part of the development process. This implies that, any assessment of possible social and economic effects should be incorporated into this process as early as possible, and hence that social science, as a major provider of such understanding, can help shape the future of nanotechnology.
