This conference discussed a number of the key challenges facing European R&D and European innovation today. Topics that were debated included how Europe, by thinking across disciplines, can better confront some of the complex realities of today's society, and what policy agenda is needed to achieve the best strategic European R&D in the future. Six parallel workshops were organised to explore some of the formative role played by  the humanities and social sciences in addressing the key challenges of global research and in advancing robust and relevant solutions of sustainable value. The themes of the workshops were:
